Finding Your Voice Through Movement: The Voice and Body Connection

I used to train in a martial art called Hapkido.

Well, technically, I only made it to yellow belt, but still! Every time I struck, whether it was a punch or a kick, I would yell out “KiHap!” This shout came from the diaphragm, not the throat, and it had a real purpose: to focus energy, engage the core, control the breath, and power up the movement.

That connection between body and voice was something I didn’t fully appreciate at the time, but I’ve come to realize how powerful it really is. Our voice is our body. They inform each other. When they work together, both become stronger, more expressive, and more precise.

And, you can tap into this connection in singing, too.

The Voice and Body Connection

Voice and movement aren’t separate worlds, they’re deeply intertwined. If you’re feeling stuck vocally, bringing some intentional motion into your practice can help you unlock new levels of ease and expression.

Here are a few ways to experiment:

  1. Transitioning between chest and head voice?
Let your arm move in a smooth, flowing wave as you sing. That physical motion can help guide your voice through the transition, smoothing out the shift and encouraging your breath to stay connected.
  2. Struggling to hit a high note?
Make a fist and strike the air as you go for it. That physical energy can activate your core and give you the boost you need, just like a KiHap in martial arts.
  3. Feeling stiff or stuck?
Try walking, swaying, or even dancing gently while you sing. Movement can release tension and help your voice move more freely.

It might feel a little silly at first, but often, the things that feel awkward are the ones that lead to breakthroughs. It’s about finding the physical movement that help you feel grounded, open, and supported.

Give It a Try

Start small. Add one gesture to a warm-up or song you're working on. Notice how your voice responds. Is it easier to connect your breath? Do you feel more expressive? Does something unlock that felt stuck before?

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Just like in martial arts, your path is your own, but you might be surprised what a well-placed KiHap (or air punch) can teach you about singing.
