Do you have a dream that you are too afraid to pursue?
Mine is music.
I have been writing songs, singing, and playing piano since I was a young child, but I never shared that passion with anyone until very recently.
Throughout my early years as an introverted only child, I spent most of my time alone. As I dealt with loneliness, writing songs became a way to cope with my inner world. For a long time, I thought writing lyrics was just meant for me. Instead, I hid the vulnerable parts of myself that I did not want anyone to see.
Throughout high school, making music was still my little secret. I joined the stage crew, where I set up the microphones and speakers for school bands, but I was never on centre stage.
I had too many fears. I was afraid that I was not good enough, but most of all, I was terrified that music was my true passion.
If you grew up with strict parents, you might understand this fear. My mom built a nail salon business as an immigrant and single mother. She worked tirelessly so I could attend a good school and find a stable job. Choosing music felt selfish, like I was throwing away everything she had worked for.
But eventually, I realized something powerful: I owe it to my younger self to pursue the dream I buried.
And that meant letting go the fear of being seen, and finally stepping into the light.
In mid-2022, I joined the Toronto music scene after connecting with artists through Beatcave, a Canadian music community. Since then, I’ve:
- Written and recorded over 20 original songs
- Hosted a local open mic at a Toronto café
- Was accepted into the 2023 Honey Jam artist development program
- Won the Yamaha Make Waves award at TD Music Hall
- Received a FACTOR Artist Development grant
- Taught over 70 singing students through Express Voice Studio
